In a remote African village, a shocking and heartbreaking scene unfolded as a group of monkeys, locally known as Nyani, fell victim to traditional bushmeat practices. The phrase “Nyani Yukotayali Kuliwa” translates to “Monkeys have been prepared to be eaten” in some Bantu dialects. The term yakukayali suggests they were caught and readied for consumption—a practice still seen in certain rural areas, driven by poverty, culture, or survival.
Locals say the monkeys were caught during an early morning hunt when they came down from the trees looking for food. Using traps and trained dogs, hunters captured the animals and brought them back to the village. There, the monkeys were killed and roasted over an open fire while villagers gathered, some out of curiosity, others for the promise of a meal.
