Eating Monkeys With Hadzabe Tribe Bush People

Deep in the wilds of Tanzania, the Hadzabe tribe—one of the last true hunter-gatherer communities on Earth—maintains a way of life virtually untouched by modern civilization. During a rare opportunity to live among them, I was invited to witness, and ultimately partake in, one of their traditional hunting practices: monkey hunting.

The experience began at dawn, with a group of Hadzabe men armed with homemade bows and poison-tipped arrows. Their agility and knowledge of the terrain were astonishing. Moving silently through the bush, they mimicked animal calls and read the forest like a book. Eventually, they tracked and brought down a monkey—an important source of protein for the tribe.

Back at the camp, the monkey was prepared over an open fire. The process was both brutal and honest, a stark contrast to the sanitized meat consumption most of us are used to. There was no waste—every part of the animal was used, from the organs to the brain. As a guest, I was offered a piece of the roasted meat. Out of respect and a deep desire to understand their world, I accepted.

The taste was gamey, slightly smoky, and unlike anything I had eaten before. It wasn’t just about the food—it was about sharing in a ritual that has sustained this tribe for generations. It was raw, real, and unforgettable.

This experience was not about sensationalism or shock value. It was about immersing myself in a culture far removed from my own and confronting the realities of survival, tradition, and respect for nature. The Hadzabe live in harmony with their environment, taking only what they need. Eating monkey with them wasn’t just a meal—it was a powerful lesson in humanity’s ancient roots.
